I created this modern acrylic painting, titled One Serving, back in 2018. At the time, I was exploring a playful yet insightful question: how many carbohydrates can a person consume in one sitting? This idea led me to paint a banana equipped with a glucose sensor—symbolically tracking the intake of carbs in real time. The glucose monitor embedded into the banana adds a humorous yet thoughtful twist, bridging the worlds of health, technology, and art.
I’m especially proud that I painted this banana long before banana-themed art became a worldwide sensation. Just a year later, Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian—a banana duct-taped to a wall—made headlines after selling for an astonishing $6.24 million at Sotheby’s. Since then, banana imagery has captured the imagination of both art collectors and pop culture enthusiasts. It’s exciting to see that collectors are now increasingly interested in artworks featuring bananas, including pieces like mine.
One Serving combines vibrant colors, clean lines, and a touch of irony. It invites viewers to think about consumption—not only in terms of food but also how trends, health fads, and even artworks are consumed by society. Through this painting, I aimed to create a dialogue between humor and deeper societal reflections.
Today, I am grateful that One Serving has found its place in a private collection that appreciates both irony and insight. This artwork continues to spark conversations, proving that even something as simple as a banana can carry layers of meaning.
If you are drawn to colorful, thought-provoking contemporary art with a playful twist, One Serving is a perfect example of how a single image can inspire curiosity, reflection, and a smile.
