Solstice
I made the installation “Solstice” (18 m tall, 2025) from compact discs that were no longer needed. It was inspired by the winter solstice, the time when we have the shortest day and the longest night. So I show a rising sun: its narrow rays begin to shine as the light reflects off the compact discs.
The installation was displayed on the façade of the Neringa hotel, designed by the Nasvytis brothers in the 1950s. It is part of Lithuania’s cultural heritage, and for Lithuanians it brings very good, I would even say Baltic, associations.
Each ray is twelve metres tall and is made of four sections. Sixteen such rays in total are mounted on a six-metre arch. For them I used eight thousand used, cut compact discs, collected by people from fifteen Lithuanian towns. My assistant and I glued the discs together, while welding the metal structures, painting, installing the lighting, and preparing and cutting the discs took the help of many other people.
